How do things happen in your golf swing? When you don’t understand how something works it is impossible to change it. So the next time you go to the practice range, it would be a good time to go on a journey of discovery. Here is what you can do to get a better understanding of how your swing works.

After you’re warmed and are in balance, start trying to slice and hook the ball. That’s right, try and slice and hook the ball on purpose. Before you can cure a problem you first need to understand how to make it happen so pay attention to what you are doing to make it happen.

Just let your natural instincts go to work. As a golf instructor, I love a slice because curing it is how I make a living. But, before I was a golf instructor I had a big slice. I learned how to cure it, and I don’t slice any more, and neither do my students. Well two still do, but I don’t talk about them.

For those of you lucky enough to remember Jack Benny he was remembered among other things as a terrible violin player, but the truth was he was a concert level musician. In order to play as if he couldn’t play, he had to understand how things worked. If you can slice or hook the ball on purpose you are on the path to unslicing or unhooking it. And the knowledge of your swing increases a hundred percent. This may take some time but if you understand what causes something, it is a lot easier to stop it.

As a golf instructor my brain is wired with knowledge of how to swing the golf club with peak efficiency; your brain also works this way. It is a problem solver. Don’t underestimate it. It is your strongest muscle. Flex it. Let me amend that – if you show up at work with your underwear on the outside of your pants twice in one week, don’t trust your brain. Come see me and let me help. Play well.
