Soledad – With their backs against the wall, the Anzar Hawks mounted an impressive comeback on Thursday night against the Soledad Aztecs in five games, winning their third match in a row.

After quickly falling behind in the first two games 20-25, 18-25, the Hawks rifled off three straight wins to eke by the host Aztecs.

“Soledad is not a bad team, but they should not have lost those two games,” coach Chris Wardlaw said. “But to come back from two down, I’m pretty pleased.”

The Hawks won the last three games over Soledad 25-17, 25-21, 15-12.

Coming back from two games down wasn’t the only comeback the Hawks mounted on Thursday, though. In the fourth game, Anzar found themselves down 19-15 late, and finished the game on a 10-2 run to ice the fourth-game win.

Although Wardlaw was not present for Thursday’s game, he said on Friday that his team was confident throughout the match.

“Even when they were down, they still thought they could win the game because they knew they were the better team,” Wardlaw said.

Christina Flores led the Hawks with a team-high 14 kills in Soledad, while Erin Deleissegues added 12 kills, and Jaclyn Wiley supplied 11 kills.

After beginning the preseason with a 3-7 record, the Hawks have since rebounded in the Mission Trail Athletic League with a 3-1 record. With Tuesday’s match at Santa Catalina postponed, Anzar will host Pacific Grove on Thursday night in San Juan Bautista. Led by Alex Bell, the Breakers are 4-0 in the MTAL.

While no date has been announced for the Santa Catalina game, Thursday’s match against Pacific Grove is slated for 6pm.
