Show off Gingerbread skills

HOLLISTER – San Benito craftsmen are invited to build a miniature house for the annual Gingerbread House Contest. Contest entry forms must be completed and returned to the Hollister Downtown Association by Friday, Nov. 30. Houses will be on display from Dec. 7 through Dec. 14 for voting. A reception will be held Dec. 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. at The Elegant Touch, 601-A San Benito Street.

The only rules are that the houses much be edible and they must be able to fit on a 24 x 24 inch display board. Non-edible pieces cannot be used on the house, but can be used as part of the landscape. The categories include:

Commerical – employees of sponsors or cooking/baking businesses

General family

General business

Children ages 8 to 12

Children 7 and under.

Awards will be given in each category, as well as a People’s Choice Award and a Best of show. The houses will be displayed at local businesses during the judging period.

Volunteers needed for emergency drill

SAN JOSE – The volunteer center Silicon Valley is local for volunteers to participate in the Golden Guardian simulated bio-terrorism exercise Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The group needs 500 volunteers to simulate people at a public venue during an emergency situation. Volunteers will role play concert attendees, while police, fire and medical first responders practice their emergency plans. The event will be at the San Jose Municipal Stadium, 588 E. Alma Ave., in San Jose.

Highway 25 shuts down

GILROY – State Hwy. 25 will be closed to east and westbound traffic at the railroad crossings near the Hwy. 101 interchange. The road will be closed Monday, Nov. 12 at 7 a.m. and will not reopen until Friday, Nov 16 at 6 p.m., according to a Union Pacific press release.

Detour signs will be prominently displayed during the railroad repairs.
