The Bureau of Land Management plans to burn up to 100 acres in December and January near Laguna Mountain in southern San Benito County.
The BLM, U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service and CalFire personnel will use the controlled burn to reduce fire danger. This wildfire season has been one of California’s worst, with more than 500,000 acres burning in Southern California last month.
“The prescribed burns will be conducted to improve wildlife habitat and reduce hazard fuels in the area,” Mike Chiodini, a fire mitigation and educational specialist for the BLM, said in a press statement. “This will help prevent an unmanageable wildfire in the future by creating a fire break in which a wild land fire will run out of fuel (brush) and be easier to control.”
Chiodini could not be reached for further comment.
Burns will be done in accordance with the National Fire Plan. Because the BLM will wait for certain weather conditions, there are no definite dates.
