San Juan Bautista

The short-handed Anzar Hawks lost to North Valley Baptist 69-61 Thursday in San Juan Bautista despite a double-double performance from Erik Olson.

Olson had 21 points and 15 rebounds to go along with eight blocks on the night for Anzar, who only dressed six players, coach Ed Cecena said.

“We were really short-handed, so we just did the best we could,” Cecena said. “They just happened to make more baskets than we did.”

Three players were scratched from the roster for the Hawks.

Steven Mockabee had 15 points for Anzar and teammate Mark Rania dropped 14 points.

The Hawks will play at Alisal in Salinas Saturday. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.

San Jose

Anzar’s slow start in the first half was enough for Overfelt Thursday in San Jose, as the Royals defeated the Hawks 52-38.

Alyssa Rodriguez had 17 points for Anzar to go along with four assists and four steals, while Nicole Mello contributed seven points and seven rebounds.

Although Anzar outscored Overfelt 30-28 in the second half, they trailed 24-8 at halftime.

“We really had a tough time taking care of the ball,” coach Aaron Netzel said. “We start slow and finish strong, but we can’t play just three quarters.

“It should have been a closer contest all the way around.”

Anzar is off until next Friday when they’ll take on Lincoln in San Jose. Tip-off is at 6:30 p.m.
