Well we asked you, our readers, your opinion and boy did you give it to us.
In last week’s column I asked you, our loyal reader fan base, to let us know which way you preferred us to reference our local mascots in stories in headlines, stories and photo cutlines.
The voting was solid with 170 readers of the Hollister Free Lance weighing in and 196 readers of the Gilroy Dispatch voicing their opinion.
At week’s end the results speak for themselves.
I guess it would be accurate to go so far and say that Gilroy readers, for the most part, hate us referring to the Mustangs as ‘Stangs. In fact 72 percent said they preferred Mustangs and 20 percent said either way which meant that only 8 percent were in favor of the ‘Stangs slang.
I for one am glad that the overwhelming majority voted in favor of Mustangs over ‘Stangs. I mean what in the world is a ‘Stang anyway? But a mustang, now you’re talking. The sleek, stallion-like horse, that stampedes its way to victory. Now that’s a mascot.
As for the ‘Balers and Haybalers battle this one went just the way our cracker jack sports staff expected. Dead even. And I mean exactly dead even. Forty-four percent said either was fine with them while 28 percent were in favor of ‘Balers and the other 28 percent were in favor of Haybalers.
With the results in we are fully prepared to back up last week’s promise.
In the Gilroy Dispatch we’ll forever, from this point forward, refer to Gilroy’s mascot only as Mustangs. As for Hollister, you too have spoken. We’ll continue to switch it up between ‘Balers and Haybalers since it’s clear that you have no aversion to one over the other and no strong attachment to one reference over the other.
For all those that participated, thanks for voting. Visit our web site this week and let us know what your pick is for next week’s Super Bowl XL between the NFC champions Seattle Seahawks and the AFC champion Pittsburgh Steelers.
