A quick look at the final score showed that the San Benito boys basketball team pocketed a nine-point league win on the road. What’s not to like, right?

But for the Haybalers and head coach John Becerra, the team’s 58-49 victory at North Salinas last night should’ve come easier than it did.

After pushing its advantage to 34-19 in the first half, San Benito saw the Vikings close to within two points in the fourth quarter before it could secure the win.

“I thought we could’ve done a better job,” said Becerra, whose team nevertheless knotted its Tri-County Athletic League record at 1-1. “I was disappointed that we let the lead slip away from us.”

Sophomore guard Marty Bueno led the ‘Balers with 16 points, including four three-pointers, while senior center Dean Wilkins grabbed nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Brian Haggett contributed another well-rounded effort with 10 points and eight assists.

After a three-point barrage from North Salinas nearly wiped out the ‘Balers’ lead, San Benito got a huge lift from the crunchtime shooting of Vince Bautista. The senior guard, who finished with eight points, knocked down all four of his free throws in the last two minutes to give the ‘Balers some breathing room.

“No matter what, the bottom line is a victory is a victory,” said Becerra, “and we’re glad about that.”

San Benito (7-9) returns to the court tomorrow when it hosts Live Oak at 7:00.
