On the fateful autumn day of Sept. 11, 2001, one of the planes hijacked by terrorists in an organized effort to inflict retaliatory pain on the United States is depicted as a real-time account. Otherwise ordinary men and women on United Airlines Flight 93 en route from Boston to San Francisco find themselves at the mercy of those who have killed the pilot and the co-pilot, intending to fly the plane into the U.S. Capital building in Washington – unless the passengers do something quickly to prevent one of the national tragedies of that day. “Flight 93” depicts the heroic efforts of the men and women that sacrificed their lives in flight, in the plane crash near Shanksville, Penn. and in control centers across the country trying to save others after planes were flown into the twin towers and Pentagon.

He Said:

The real-time depiction enacting the events of Sept. 11, 2001 that blended Paul Greengrass’ experience in documentary filmmaking with dramatic interpretation was a relentless re-experiencing of that day. Trying to put the emotion aside of the still fresh actual events to review this film, I need to say that the almost too-natural reactions of the actors in “Flight 93” put it on a similar level as the widely watched television version with the added benefit of enhanced sound and the breadth of the big screen. Still, it is a must see, if you are ready to re-experience the tragedies of that day.

On the R&R Scale (1-10):

7 for script: Condensed and realistic.

7 for direction: The quality of the cinematography was noteworthy.

7 for acting: Natural.

7 for plot: Revealed the complexities of the hijackers’ horrific plans.

7 for entertainment value: Realistic dramatization.

She Said:

Feeling all the fatalistic angst in re-living Greengrass’ respectful treatment of the tragedy of 9-11 by watching “Flight 93” was both personally uncomfortable and yet, somehow, a tribute to those who sacrificed their lives, like going to a memorial. The reenactment by the actors of the events, with commentary by their loved ones, created such a mix of wide-ranging emotions that I was spellbound by the film. I know I was not alone. When the film ended and the screen went dark, most of the audience remained silently in their chairs, dealing on a personal level with what they had just seen.

Greengrass definitely brought it to us in very realistic terms and many of the scenes will be with me always – especially the expressions on faces that said more than words could.

On the R&R Scale (1-10):

8 for script: Paid tribute respectfully and realistically.

8 for direction

8 for acting

8 for plot

8 for entertainment value: So we never forget.
