College hires instructors, offers more music, English, theater, biology and psychology

Students at Gavilan College will have a bigger selection of classes to choose from this fall as the college has announced the hiring of five new instructors.

The new teachers will offer courses in music, English, theater, biology and psychology.

In the past, some Gavilan students have contended that their graduations were delayed because they were unable to get certain classes that were already filled to capacity. The new influx of liberal arts brainpower will help alleviate that problem, said college spokeswoman Jan Bernstein Chargin. Students also will be able to consult with their teachers outside of class since the full-time instructors will keep office hours.

“The biggest benefit to students is they’ll have access to their instructors outside of class as well as stronger programs,” Bernstein Chargin said. “The consistency will enable students to complete their degrees when they want to.”

Students have been clamoring for more music courses and concerts, Bernstein Chargin said. The new music instructor, recognized pianist Maria Amirkhanian, will help fulfill that need. Amirkhanian taught at Fresno State University and delighted audiences this year at Gavilan’s annual Bach to Blues concert.

“There is such an interest in music but we haven’t been able to expand the offering because we only had one faculty member,” Bernstein Chargin said.

Other new full-time faculty members are English instructor Jessica Hooper, theater instructor John Lawton-Haehl, biology instructor Rey Morales, and psychology instructor Carlton Oler.

“I’m just delighted that we’re getting a greater full-time presence in the arts and social sciences,” said Fran Lozano, Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences. “It’s a group of dynamic, exciting people.”

The college also has change several part-time personnel to full-time. These include student counselor Johanna Stewart, technology librarian Dana Young, and ESL (English as a second language) instructor Liana Wexler.
