Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz and San Benito counties launched its annual Harvest Food Drive Sept. 25. The theme this year is “Kids Helping Kids.” Through Oct. 13, 11 San Benito schools are collecting food and cash donations.

Thousands of San Benito County school children are collecting food to alleviate local hunger in the annual food drive. The Harvest Food Drive is sponsored by DMB/El Rancho San Benito, as well as Applied Materials, Birds Eye Foods, Coast Commercial Bank, Community Printers, Driscoll’s, Fox35, Granite Construction, KION46, PG&E, Plantronics, Seagate, Union Bank of California and Wells Fargo.

Santa Cruz County schools are also participating in the drive. The elementary school that raises the most money will receive a new computer donated by Union Bank. The Santa Cruz Skate Shop is donating $600 worth of Santa Cruz Skate Shop apparel to the middle or high school collecting the most food.

Local agencies that benefit from Second Harvest food drives include Community Pantry, Jovenes de Antaño, New Beginnings, the Salvation Army and St. Vincent De Paul. In Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties, more than 18,000 children received food through neighborhood pantries, Food for Children distribution sites, soup kitchens and other nonprofit organizations served by Second Harvest Food Bank each month.
