Hawks waiting to hear if 19-6 record is good enough for CCS
Division V playoffs
San Juan Bautista – The Anzar girls volleyball team showed no ill effects of a tough five-game loss to Pacific Grove on Wednesday and wrapped up its regular season with a dominant three-game sweep of Robert Louis Stevenson at home Thursday.

“I was a little worried about their energy because it was a brutal match (Wednesday),” co-head coach Mike Dorney said. “But their desire was there. They love to play. I shouldn’t have been as worried as I was.”

The Hawks (19-6, 12-4 Mission Trail Athletic League) entered the night in a three-way tie for second place with Pacific Grove and Santa Catalina and will have to wait to find out the results of their final matches to see if they moved into sole possession of second place and grabbed the league’s second automatic berth to the Central Coast Section playoffs. Even without earning an automatic bid, Anzar is still hopeful of gaining an at-large berth.

“I’m just letting it flow, we’ll see what happens,” said senior outside hitter Emily Deleissegues, who had 14 kills, 22 digs and five aces. “I think we deserve to be in CCS.”

The Hawks were in control for most of the night. They scored seven of the first eight points in the first game while rolling to a 25-12 win.

That was the case again in the second game, which also featured a 11-1 run at one stretch that included five kills from junior middle hitter Christina Flores. Deleissegues finished off that game with three straight kills off Danielle Bossler assists and Anzar won 25-11.

The Pirates appeared to be set to challenge the Hawks in the third game and had it knotted up at 5-5 early on. But a 12-0 run, which was powered by six of Flores’ team-high 15 kills, ended those thoughts and Anzar rolled to a 25-10 victory to take the match.

“I loosened up a lot more tonight and I played much better than I did (Wednesday),” Flores said. “I just came with the mentality that whatever happens, happens.”

Sophomore Erin Deleissegues finished with nine kills and 12 digs, while Bossler recorded 32 assists on the night.
