Editor,

Congratulations to Kyle Sharp and all the Baler athletes and to all Balers for that matter. There is one place I do not want to read their names. That would be on any war memorial, as I often see Balers in their snappy, not-quite-adult-size, military uniforms.

For those of you in the community who might share the same sentiments, we invite you to a candlelight vigil on the second anniversary of the Iraq War. We will be memorializing and mourning our slain soldiers. There is no greater tragedy to affect a family than to lose a child to war. Appropriately this memorial will be outside the Veteran’s Memorial Building on Saturday, March 19 from 7 to 8pm. Bring a candle and join us silently.

When I traveled to our sister city, Takino, in Japan, as a delegate from Hollister, we visited many military burial shrines. Something different pervaded those sites. Large multi-colored banners hung in the breeze begging for peace and war no more.

Please stand with us and with our sister city, with our country, and with the rest of the world in the name of peace.

Mary Zanger, Hollister in Black
