Honors

Local UCSB Students

The following local undergraduate students at UC Santa Barbara were selected for the Dean’s Honor List for their work during the winter quarter: Bruce Cooper of Gilroy, Thomas Flowers of Morgan Hill, Daniel Novak of Morgan Hill and Amanda Tewes of Morgan Hill.

To earn this honor, students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.75 on a program of 12 or more graded units in the college of letters and science or 3.50 in the college of engineering.

Anniversary

Starritt

Bill and Betty Starritt celebrated their 60-year anniversary with a surprise party on Saturday, April 9 at Eagle Ridge Golf Course.

Their son William “Timer” Starritt and his wife Judy helped to keep the party a surprise by inviting Bill and Betty to dinner without telling them where they were going.

Upon arriving, the couple was shocked to find about 65 of their friends and family members waiting for them.

Bill had been a pilot on a carrier for the Navy and one Navy buddy even flew out for the occasion.

Set with pastel balloons, decorations, lights and pictures of the couple, the evening was filled with music, dancing, singing, food, friends and many memories. Their grandson Mark Jacobson presented a slide show. A friend “Montana” sang some songs for the occasion as well.

Their daughter Susan had invitations to the event display a picture of the couple, as well as had the picture blown up to poster size to commemorate the event.

Military

Roger Burnett

Airman First Class Roger Burnett of Gilroy graduated from U.S. Air Force Technical School Security Forces training at Lackland AFB in Texas, on March 25, and has now reported to Tinker AFB in Oklahoma. He graduated from Gilroy High School in 1996, from Gavilan College’s Airframe and Powerplant courses in 1998, and is the son of Paul and Rose Burnett of Gilroy.

Kyle H. Wendorf

Civilian Kyle H. Wendorf, son of Judy M. and Gary A. Wendorf of Gilroy, Calif., recently enlisted in the United States Navy under the Delayed Entry Program at Navy Recruiting District, Omaha, Neb. Wendorf will report for active duty to undergo basic training at the Navy’s Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill. Wendorf is a 1997 graduate of Gilroy High School.

Jonathan M. Causey

Army Pfc. Jonathan M. Causey has graduated from the armament/tank turret repairer advanced individual training course at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, Md. The student has learned to perform ordnance armament direct and general support maintenance repairs and troubleshoot mechanisms, systems and components on tank turrets, armament weapons, self-propelled artillery and infantry fighting vehicles; also, correct electrical and hydraulic malfunctions on Howitzer cannons, mount and turret drive assemblies and perform cannon tube evaluation. Causey is the son of Patricia M. Garza of Hollister and Ronald B. Causey Jr. of Greenville, N.C. In 2004, the soldier graduated from Farmville Central High School, N.C.

Andrzej M. Wojcicki

Air Force Airman 1st Class Andrzej M. Wojcicki has arrived for duty at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho. The airman, a contracting squadron with one year of military service, is assigned to the 366th Contracting Squadron. He is the son of Mike Lamb of Hollister. Wojcicki is a 2002 graduate of San Benito High School.

Wedding

Bellacera-Arnold

Rachel Bellacera of White Salmon, Wash. was married to Jeffrey Arnold of Gilroy on Jan. 5 in Los Barriles, Baja, Mexico. Rachel, daughter of John and Patricia Bellacera of White Salmon, graduated from Columbia High School in 1997, and Jeffrey, son of Larry and Estelle Arnold of Gilroy, graduated from Gilroy High School in 1997.

The couple shared their vows with immediate family in sunset ceremony. The bride was given away by her father and the ceremony was officiated by the bride’s grandmother. After the ceremony, the couple and their families enjoyed a traditional Mexican feast and margaritas prepared by Chef Isabella Fuentes.

The wedding was later celebrated by family and friends on March 12, at Studio 1050 in downtown Portland, Ore. Guests enjoyed salsa music, Spanish tapas and a tequila toast at the cocktail party event.

The bride and groom met while studying at Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., from which they both graduated in 2001 with Bachelor degrees in International Business.

The couple studied abroad in Spain during their undergraduate studies, Rachel in Sevilla and Jeff in Valencia. Rachel is currently a business and corporate development manager at SRC Software in Portland, Ore. She moonlights as a restaurant critic for Citysearch.com. Jeff is a senior logistical strategy analyst at the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore. Both have traveled extensively for their jobs over the past few years. Presently, they have made their home in downtown Portland. Later this spring, they plan to take their honeymoon to Turkey, Crete and Greece.
