A small school bus carrying a half-dozen elementary school children was involved in an accident at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday at a San Benito Street intersection, while there were no apparent injuries.
The accident on the rainy Thursday involved three vehicles at the intersection of San Benito and Haydon streets. There were six children inside the small yellow school bus. None of them were injured in the incident, while there was no ambulance on scene as authorities investigated.
Hollister School District Superintendent Gary McIntire showed up to make sure the school was following all appropriate laws and waited until additional school buses arrived to transport the waiting children. He recalled there may have been one other minor accident involving a school bus in the past few years.
“It’s a pretty rare occurrence,” he said.
McIntire explained that the bus and students, by state law, could not be released until a California Highway Patrol officer cleared the scene. The bus remained parked in the middle of Haydon Street near the San Benito Street intersection for about 30 minutes.
A tow service, meanwhile, removed a gray sedan from the middle of San Benito Street so authorities could open that portion of the road. The sedan sustained serious damage to its front end. The third involved vehicle, a truck, had been parked off to the side on Haydon Street.
A CHP officer was continuing to investigate the scene and question witnesses as the students were transported by other buses.
Police Chief David Westrick on Thursday evening said there were no other serious reports of accidents in Hollister on the rainy Thursday.
