Because the HDA represents downtown merchants, its Board of Directors decided at its monthly Board meeting Feb. 18 to take a public stand against the Growth Control Initiative, said HDA President Jeff Welch.
“We looked ahead 10 years at what downtown Hollister would look like if Measure G passed and if it did not,” Welch said. “Things are bad enough now with people closing business and buildings empty. Downtown could die (if Measure G passed).”
Although the opposition to the measure was unanimous, there was not consensus about the Board taking a stand publicly, Welch said. Eight of the nine Board members were present at the meeting.
“We are responsible for our businesses downtown and their success,” Welch said. “We feel that the downtown should be the social and economic hub of Hollister. That’s our mission statement.”
