Dear Editor:
In regards to the Aron Tripp election investigation report after reading all three reports and the civil rights division assistant attorney general report. Let us begin by responding to Aron Tripp’s report. To the matter of Mr. De La Cruz being accused of violating certain sections of the elections codes, it reminds us of the Florida elections, in which Bush was appointed by the Justices of the Supreme Court.
Having been active for 40 years in city, county, state and federal elections we (Mexican-American Political Association) find this report to be nothing but infractions by Mr. De La Cruz. It is well known that these kind of infractions have been happening for many years in other counties. It is appalling to know that the Board of Supervisors is protecting incumbent Bob Cruz by taking so long to respond to all these charges. To paraphrase Mr. Cruz, “Get your ducks in order” before you question me.
A second concern is the Sheriff’s report about someone voting twice. This person simply forgot to mail in her ballot, so she decided to go down to her polling site and vote in person – no infraction.
A third concern is the federal report. Yes, there are mistakes made by the elections department in the bilingual ballot information, which many are saying was not available. But to try to make the county clerk, Mr. John Hodges, the “scape-goat” for all this mess is simply asinine.
We, as Mapistas, are proud to work with Mr. Hodges and his entire staff. Now, if a certain individual would have worked with M.A.P.A. instead of against, in reaching the Spanish community, he would have known the difficulties we (M.AP.A.) had in educating them. For example, M.A.P.A. offered a “how-to-use-a-voting machine class.” Three people showed. It’s quite embarrassing to cry foul don’t you think?
To those who do not know, we are the Mexican-American Political Association. We are statewide. Yes, we are involved with voting rights issues. We are 501 3(c) incorporated. We are in no way shape or form like LULAC.
