If the free watermelon doesn’t entice county residents to head to the 18th Annual Hollister Street Festival, the rocking entertainment, restored classic cars and free admission may do the trick.
This Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the only traffic in downtown Hollister will be people browsing through vendor booths, children running to get in line for the kiddy rides and music lovers grooving to the beats of local bands, as more than 10,000 are expected to attend the family-oriented festivities.
“It’s just a great one-day event for people to come out and enjoy the community,” Hollister Downtown Association Executive Director Liz Kresky said.
The free watermelon, which is donated by Phil Foster and Swank Farms, has been a tradition at the festival since its inception in 1986, Kresky said.
Another tradition, is entertaining locals, and giving back to the community at the same time. A majority of the booths at the festival will be run by local non-profits, which will allow a lot of the money raised to come right back into the community, Kresky said.
All of the musical entertainment throughout the day, will be played by San Benito County bands as well.
Dennis Osorio, festival entertainment coordinator, said the main stage, which will be located on Sixth Street, will have a wide variety of music to enjoy. There will be karoake too.
“There is a great mixture of 50s, Latin, rock and blues,” he said. “There is definitely something for anyone in the family to enjoy, and it’s a great place to grab a seat and enjoy your lunch.”
A few blocks away from the main stage, on the grass near the Briggs Building at the corner of San Benito and Fourth streets, will be the children’s stage. Child emcees will run the show all day introducing a wide variety of acts including the Galaxy All-star Cheerleaders, and kiddy rides, petting zoo and the children’s’ carnival will be located just across the street.
Another attraction, particularly for the auto enthusiast in the family, is the classic car show, which will have more than 50 cars on display throughout the day.
