Hollister – Families who meet certain household income requirements can receive free or reduced lunch for their children attending county schools this year.

The State Meals Program, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, is available to students attending all county districts whose parents meet the income requirements. For example, a family of four that earns $24,505 or less can apply for free lunch and breakfast. If the family makes $34,873, they can apply for a reduced-price. The income rate differs based on family size.

San Benito County Superintendent of Schools, Tim Foley said it’s important for every child to get the proper food and rest in order to learn.

“There is nothing that starts a kid’s education off better than good nutrition and rest,” he said. “Unfortunately, there are families in our community where children aren’t getting the nutrition, and their parents need to know this option is available.”

Last year alone, more than 50 percent of students at Hollister School District participated in the free and reduced lunch program. In 2002, out of 58 counties in California, San Benito County ranked as the 12th poorest county, and had the 13th highest rate of child poverty, according to the California Food Policy Advocates.

For households receiving Food Stamp, CalWORKs, Kin GAP or FDPIR benefits, applicants only have to provide their case number. Those who don’t receive benefits need to include the names of everyone in the household and the amount and source of income received by each household member.

Applications are being distributed to all households with a letter informing parents that the opportunity for free and reduced lunch is available. Parents also can pick up applications at each school site, and Foley said, parents can talk to administrators about the program in private.

“We encourage the schools to identify the families in need, and it’s done in a very confidential way,” he said.
