The Seventh Annual National Night Out celebration is returning to its roots as the event moves from the Veterans Memorial Park back to downtown Hollister.

The Aug. 5 event, organized by the Hollister Police Department, will move back to the park next to the Briggs Building at the intersection of Fourth and San Benito streets.

The community-oriented celebration has been held at Veterans Memorial Park for the past three years.

“We wanted to go back where this all started for us,” Crime Prevention Officer David Blair said.

Hundreds of Hollister residents are expected to attend the annual crime and drug prevention event which will run from 5 to 9 p.m.

“There will be everything from crime prevention to child fingerprinting at this year’s event,” Blair said. “There will also be low-priced bike helmets on sale for children.”

Some of the other events this year include a jump house, face painting, fishing and ring tosses for children, and a variety of other activities intended to educate youths and parents about safety.

“The Hollister Fire Department and the California Department of Forestry will also be there with their fire engines and some of their rescue equipment,” Blair said.

Although this is the seventh time that the police department has held the event locally, the celebration has been held nationally for 20 years.

For four hours, residents throughout Hollister and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors.

More than 32 million people are expected to participate in ‘America’s Night Out Against Crime.’ National Night Out 2003 is supported in part through a cooperative agreement awarded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, Office of Justice Programs and the U.S. Department of Justice.

The National Night Out campaign is a special community-oriented program designed to build neighborhood unity and strengthen the partnership between police and the communities they serve, according to officials with the National Night Out project.

Last year’s National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from 9,500 communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canada and military bases worldwide.
