Hollister-based Bulldog Boxing Club is well known throughout the state. Founder Zeke Lopez said his club was well-received at a show in Mendota last weekend.

“Everyone gave us a big ovation,” said Lopez. “It was outside at a carnival. Man, was it hot. It was about 110-degrees.”

Hot in the ring were two Bulldog boxers – Danny Hernandez and Anthony DeLaCerda. Hernandez, a 134-pound, 18 year-old, had little trouble with his opponent, scoring a unanimous three-round decision.

“Danny walked all over him,” said Lopez. “The guy didn’t belong in the ring with Danny. Danny has potential to be a great boxer, but first he has to get rid of some bad habits.”

DeLaCerda, a 117-pound, 13 year-old, won a closer decision over a boxer from Salinas.

“It was a pretty even fight,” said Lopez. “I was proud of the guys and we had real good parental support.”

Lopez is taking six kids to Bakersfield this weekend, though none are guaranteed matches.
