Jerry Sepulveda is glad to be staying home this weekend – kind of. Sepulveda and his Hollister National Little League 9-10 All-Stars won’t have to travel far when the Section 5 Tournament takes place at Vets Park beginning Friday and continues through July 23.
The National 9-10’s wrapped up the District 9 title last Monday by beating Hollister American 10-2 at Continental Field in Salinas.
“It’s great we don’t have to commute,” said Sepulveda. “We can relax some. But, on the other hand, part of the fun for the kids is to travel.”
In the win on Monday – the sixth without a defeat for National – Daniel Arevalo pitched all six innings for the win.
“Daniel pitched a solid game,” said Sepulveda.
Oscar Ramirez had two doubles and played an outstanding shortstop.
“Daniel usually plays shortstop when he’s not pitching,” said Sepulveda. “So Ramirez’ play was key for us.”
Mark Hurley, who had a great tourney, went 3-4 for Hollister National.
Darin Gillies had a double for Hollister American, while Bryan Granger had a couple of basehits. Andre Lucas and Nathan Winn scored for Hollister American. Winn went 3-4 in the 13-3 victory on Sunday.
“My hat is off to Hollister American,” said Sepulveda. “They played with a lot of heart.”
Hollister National’s first game is Saturday at 11 a.m. vs. the District 12-District 39 winner. That game is played this Friday at 7 p.m. District 44 plays District 59 this Friday night at 7 p.m.
