Expect Paris to be on stage Aug. 22 when the YMCA of San Benito County 5th Annual Charity Golf Tournament takes place at San Juan Oaks Golf Club. Paris will be one of many sports celebrities on hand, courtesy of Hollister High graduate Coach Parks, class of ’53.

Other celebs confirmed by Coach Parks are ex-Niners Jerry Mertens and R.C. Owens, plus former Stanford head football coach John Ralston, and ex-Los Angeles Raider Mervyn Fernandez. Former Bay Area sportscaster Jan Hutchins will make his usual appearance. Former 49er receiver Gordy Soltau is a possible guest celebrity.

The emcee for the night’s proceedings is local realtor David Baumgartner.

Cost is $150 per person and entry includes green fee, cart, range balls, box lunch, dinner and prizes. Dinner only is $25 per person.

The format is a four-person scramble with team handicap. Check in time is 9:30 a.m. with a 12 p.m. shotgun start. Awards dinner and live auction and raffle commences at 6 p.m.

“There is a lot of interest for the event,” said events coordinator and YMCA Office Manager Merri Vieira. “It’s looking good, but we still have room.”

Coach Parks, who will turn 70 in February 2004, expects to swing the sticks this time around.

“It’s nice to come back to my home town,” said Coach Parks, who was raised in Hollister. “I’ll do anything to help the kids. The YMCA is a positive organization. There are a lot of people in need in that town.”

Proceeds are to benefit the YMCA. If interested, call Vieira at (831) 637-8600.
