As a member of local law enforcement and a resident of
Hollister, for obvious reasons I wish to keep my name anonymous. I
supported John Sarsfield’s run for District Attorney. I didn’t
agree with his political tact of attacking outgoing DA Harry Damkar
during that campaign but felt John was the best candidate for the
job.
After eight months in office, I feel I made the wrong choice. If
I had to do it over, Candice Hooper would be my choice.

The majority of complaints made by local Peace Officers are that Mr. Sarsfield kicks back way too many cases sent to his office. Some say over 50 percent. Many of the cases he doesn’t kick back disappear in his office and are not charged. Because he does all the charging himself, we have to call him directly for a status check. The problem there is, he’s usually not in, his voice mail is full and if a message is left, he doesn’t call back.
To confirm this, all you need to do is compare reports written and sent to the DA with the number of cases actually filed in court. Then compare the first eight months of this year to last year and the year before.
As I said, John was my best choice but not anymore.”
“The Grand Jury report for 2002-03 was made available to the public. THANK YOU GRAND JURY!
After reading the report the Grand Jury gave on review of the county Auditor’s office, a question came to mind. The report states: ‘For the fiscal year 2002-03, the county budget is $72,815,962. This includes $64,629,929 estimated operating expenses and a reserve or designated fund amount of $8,185,983.’ The report also states ‘that all departments must stay within the total budget for their departments.’
The Free Lance published a front page article Thursday, Aug. 21, titled, ‘SBC Water District has $24 million in reserve.’ Included in this article, it states that the County of San Benito has a budget of $64 million with $1 million in reserve.
My question is: WHAT HAPPENED TO $7 MILLION IF ALL DEPARTMENTS ARE WITHIN BUDGET?
When was the last time San Benito County was audited?
Thank you Citizens Voice for allowing this question to come before the public.”
“I recently changed my voter registration to Republican. The reason: I accidentally heard Tom McClintock speaking on the George Putnam show in Southern California. Everything he said simply resonated with truth, common sense and precise knowledge. Since then, I’ve read his columns on the Senator’s website, particularly the one ‘Why the pledge matters,’ which is simply eloquent.
Tom McClintock is the obvious choice to save the State of California from this horrible fiscal mess we’re in. How unfortunate that the Republican party has chosen to abandon it’s principles in order to push Schwarzenegger forward. The ‘bar’ has certainly been lowered in regard to character, policy positions, intelligence and experience, in order to slip a pseudo-Republican celebrity past the Democrats. What a shame! I’ll vote for Tom no matter what.”
