“We’re focusing on how sports is directly related to the parents,” said Norton. “Some parents don’t get what high school athletics is all about. We’re an educational institution. It’s not necessarily about a win or lose situation. Lessons in life are learned through participation.”
Last year, Anzar was awarded the Mission Trail Athletic League Sportsmanship Award. One year ago, Norton contracted the Positive Coaches Alliance. Thursday’s presentation is made possible through a grant from the San Juan Bautista Rotary Club.
Speaking will be CIF representative Rob Blake.
“Rob does a great job,” said CIF media representative Jim Duel. “He thought of the idea to talk to parents as to what they could give to their kids to help them with sportsmanship.”
Blake will also talk about scholarships, or more importantly, how rare scholarships are awarded. According to Duel, only two per cent of high school athletes receive athletic scholarships.
“It’s a reality check,” said Duel.
The presentation is approximately 45 minutes long and, once again, is open to everyone…..
Dave Tipton, a Baler alum of 1967, is in his 15th season as defensive tackles coach for the Stanford Cardinal football team. For the second straight year, Tipton’s family sang the national anthem at the Cardinal-San Jose State game. Tipton’s wife, Mia, sons Will and Matt, and daughters Amanda and Megan showed some serious harmony before last Saturday’s game and received a huge applause.
Megan, 21, works for the Stanford Marketing Department. She borrowed the BINGO idea from the San Jose Giants game and ran a test during Saturday’s game. Five hundred bingo cards were handed out. Participants
had to look for bingo numbers when something happened during the game. For a touchdown pass by a receiver or a run by a running back from 1-5 yards, etc., there would be a bingo No.
Yours truly bingoed before halftime and received a bobble-Stanford Tree…..
Tailgating with Betty Breen, Dave Tipton’s mother-in-law, I heard a fun story about a Big Game and two ex-Haybalers. Bill Johnson (1968) played for Cal, while Paul Breen (1968), son of Betty, played for Stanford. During one Cal-Stanford game, the benches cleared and Johnson and Breen were out there in the mayhem.
“Bill saw Paul and the two started dancing,” said Betty, laughing away. “It was really funny because they were old friends.”
Mia and Amanda were visiting Washington D.C. over the summer and wanted to check out the White House. This day and age, that can be tough. Dave Tipton, using his pull, called Stanford A.D. Ted Leland for Condaleeza Rice’s phone number. Tipton relayed the number to Mia, who got Rice’s secretary. The initial reaction was forgetabouttit, but a couple of hours later, Rice’s secretary called back and said a photo I.D. and a social security card would be needed. Mia and Amanda got the personal tour of the White House, proving it’s not what you know…..
The Balers played very well Friday night in the loss to Valley Christian. Linebacking Alex Diaz did a good job of bulldogging down Warriors runners on the outside. Diaz is a good wrestler for Matt Olejnik during wrestling season.
The best news for the Balers…..That will be the best team they play the whole year.
