The Morgan Hill Police Department arrested an alleged rapist while he was reportedly visiting family in Hollister on Tuesday evening.
Leonard Rafael Gonzalez, 25, of Morgan Hill, was arrested by Morgan Hill police with assistance from the Hollister Police Department at 951 Talbot Drive, Morgan Hill Police Lt. Joe Sampson said.
Gonzalez was arrested on suspicion of rape, domestic abuse and false imprisonment. He is currently being held without bail in Santa Clara County Jail.
If Gonzalez is charged, tried and convicted of the charges he was arrested on, he could be sentenced to as much as 15 years in prison, according to the state’s penal code.
Gonzalez is considered the primary suspect in the alleged Oct. 25 rape of a young woman in Morgan Hill. The woman’s name and age were withheld by police.
Investigators said the rape happened shortly after Gonzalez moved into a home with the adult woman, police said.
Investigators said the rape was reported Monday and that further investigation led detectives to Hollister where they learned Gonzalez was with his relatives.
When police showed up to arrest him, Gonzalez did not put up a struggle.
“He was arrested without incident,” Sampson said.
Gonzalez is expected to be arraigned in Santa Clara County Superior Court on rape and abuse charges by Friday, investigators said.
