“The girls just don’t get down,” said coach Chris Wardlaw. “They are almost like sisters even off the court. They do everything together.”
With the 16-25, 13-25, 25-18, 25-19, 15-10 win, last year’s Central Coast Section Division 5 champion moves just one game away from a .500 mark with a 8-9 overall record and a 6-2 Mission Trail Athletic League record.
Anzar, which is currently in third place in the league behind Santa Catalina and Carmel, will play visiting Stevenson tonight.
The Hawks, who were playing shorthanded, will again be without senior outside hitter Leanna Hardy, who was getting dental work done.
Anzar committed several errors in the first two games to help the Breakers pick up wins but came back strong when it counted.
In the fourth game, the Breakers were able to take a 7-4 lead after numerous balls hit the net and rolled over the net onto the Hawks side.
Anzar came back to tie the game at ten on a kill by Kelsey Stone and took the lead on a perfect cross-court set by Amy Knight to Treva Crocker, who put it down with authority.
“We were just trying to change up the hits,” Wardlaw said. “With Treva we just wanted to go tip, kill, tip so they would not be able to get any digs.”
The 5-11 MTAL kill leader led the Hawk attack with 20 kills, 10 digs and six blocks. Knight was second in kills with five, but had 17 assists, just one behind assist leader Emily Delisseguess. Justine Wiley had four kills and six digs in the game.
Suzie Garcia came up with a power hit that just cleared the net and fell over untouched to give the Hawks the 13-11 advantage. Anzar worked out a 16-13 lead and forced Pacific Grove to call the timeout.
Krocker picked up a kill then did it serving with three straight points. King began a rally when she knocked in an ace, and Stone dropped one down the far line just fair to put Anzar up 22-16.
The fifth game was another tight game, but the quickness and timely hits of the Hawks were able to show through.
Crocker hit the far line to tie the score at four. Delisseguess five-point serving streak, which included an ace, gave the Hawks an 8-4 lead before she eventually hit the net.
Anzar moved up 12-7 as a ball served by King sailed through the fingers of the Pacific Grove setter. After the Hawks won the next point, Pacific Grove had to call a timeout to get some momentum back.
It worked, and the Breakers picked up the next three points to force Anzar to call the timeout.
Knight picked up the kill to break up the run and then finished with a knuckle ball serve that died just after it fell over the net away from the Breaker.
