With all this political chatter, I’d like to take a break to
show some pride in some of our own. I realize that this may be the
only column with room to note our local high school alumni
successes. These are just a few recent sports accomplishments I am
aware of. I hope there are others who will let us know of more
local high school grads’ success stories.
Of note is the recent State championship men’s water polo team
from West Valley Junior College. On that team were two 2003 San
Benito High School grads, Greg Henneman and Danny Valenzuela.

Also of note are SBHS graduates Kristofer Barr, class of 2000, who captains the Loyola Marymount University (LMU) team, and his brother, 2003 SBHS grad Nikolas Barr. On Kris’ three goals, the LMU Lions won their league championship two weeks ago placing LMU in the National Final Four Water Polo Championships.
I have heard that Lindsey Davies, another SBHS grad, will be taking to the volleyball court in Southern California in the state semis. She is a member of the West Valley Junior College league championship team.
I know the community takes pride, as I do, in these young athletes’ accomplishments and wishes them all the best. I just would like to read more about our local grads in our local paper’s sports section where these stories really belong.”
“As a resident of Hawkins Street I have been following the lack of tree maintenance from the city. My three mulberries are so huge, tall and low. My gutters don’t get cleaned by the street sweeper as the sweeper cannot drive under them.
I do not believe I should be paying for a service I’m not receiving. I wonder how many services the city manager is paying for and not receiving the benefit of?
I called the city to find out when the crew would be coming to give these trees the attention they need. This the response I received: I must go to City Hall and buy a permit to have my trees pruned. I must hire a professional tree pruner/arborist.
For the heck of it, I contacted three arborists and have three estimates, which range from $150 to $900 to have three mulberry trees pruned properly.
Is the city manager a graduate of the University of Dumb and Dumber? I’m supposed to pay for a permit to maintain trees that are the city’s responsibility to maintain, then hire and pay an arborist? I don’t think so!
I have made a point of walking the neighborhood of Monterey, West, Powell, South, A, B, and Suiter streets and they all have out of control mulberries and maple trees. So what’s the city doing? Answer please!”
“I truly resent and fully disagree with the statements made about Robbie Scattini. If people think that Robbie isn’t performing the duties of the county Marshal the way it should be done, than why has the position been held by him for so long? Why was he voted to be on City Council if he is such a slacker? To me, it must be a conspiracy or a joke.
There is no such thing as receiving two major positions in a county for no legitimate reason. Robbie Scattini was put in the position as County Marshal and City Council because the people of San Benito County VOTED for him. He has held his position strong and is willing to do as much as needed for Hollister.
Exactly what is the County Marshal supposed to do? If anyone should know it’s the person who has held the position the longest. Let it be known, Robbie Scattini holds that position. Robbie is loved by many residents in San Benito County and he is a very multitasked, friendly but professional Marshal who doesn’t walk around with a stick up his rear like all the other people that work for the Hollister PD.
Stop tearing Robbie down and do something about it instead of writing about it if it is really affecting your lives!”
