Despite a 35-21 road loss to the Oak Grove Eagles last Friday
night, Live Oak Football Coach Glen Webb is happy with his team’s
steady improvement and believes that the 2002 Acorns first win is
right around the corner.

Despite a 35-21 road loss to the Oak Grove Eagles last Friday night, Live Oak Football Coach Glen Webb is happy with his team’s steady improvement and believes that the 2002 Acorns first win is right around the corner.
“Things improved quite a bit from last week to this,” said Webb on Wednesday. “We had 389 yards of total offense. It was the kind of game that we should have won.”
And the Acorns probably would have had it not been for crucial turnovers-six to be exact.
Against the Eagles, Live Oak turned the ball over twice on interceptions and four times on the ground. But the killer was that three of Live Oak’s four fumbles were inside Oak Grove’s 30-yard line-one occurred on the five-yard line as the Acorns were on their way to punching a touchdown into the end zone.
“We probably should have won 44-10. We did meet some of our offensive goals, but the week before we had no turnovers,” said Webb. “We’ve definitely got to work on protecting the football.”
At a home contest tonight against Seaside High, Webb is hoping that his Acorns can walk off Richert Field with their first win of the young season. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
Like Live Oak, Seaside is also looking for its first win of the year.
“They’ve got some great size and speed-a number of 300 pounders,” said Webb. “And they set their tailback in an I set about nine-yards back to give themselves plenty of room to run. They’ve got a lot of playmakers and talent at the skill positions.”
Against the Eagles, Live Oak jumped out to an early 7-0 first-quarter lead when Acorn quarterback Orin Catrett hit wide receiver Steven Conner on a quick-slant pass at Live Oak’s 29-yard line. Catrett busted through Oak Grove’s secondary and ran 71 yards to the end zone for the score.
In the second quarter, Live Oak tacked on another seven points when Catrett hooked up with Conner again. This time it was a 12-yard touchdown reception.
At halftime the score was locked at 14-14.
In the second half, the Eagles scored 21 unanswered points before Live Oak’s Justin Krulee scored on a two-yard run in the fourth quarter, which made the score 35-21.
For the night, Catrett was 7 of 17 for 180 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Prior to the Oak Grove game, Webb had alternated between Catrett and Trevor Zebe in the quarterback position. Afterwards, he anticipated starting Catrett at quarterback for the remainder of the season.
Just as impressive at Catrett’s poise in the pocket and leaderships skills on the sidelines was the Acorns rushing attack that tacked up 209 yards on the ground against an Eagle team that has won their league title the last six years.
“We spread it around and used five different guys,” said Webb. “We really ran the ball well.”
Almost half of those yards came from Catrett, who saw time in the season opener at tailback when Zebe was in the quarterback position. Catrett ran for 94 yards against Oak Grove.
And when you combine a strong running ability with an accurate arm, Catrett will play a vital role in the Acorns attempt to get back to their perennial winning ways.
“Our goal here is to make the playoffs,” Webb said. “That’s the goal every year.”
