The 79th Annual San Benito County Fair has come and gone for
another year. As usual, it was another great fair. Many South
County folks participated in one way or another and some have
bigger bragging rights than others. Besides the fair, there were
many other things going on down here as well.

Katie Donham and Rachel Diaz showed their guinea pigs at the fair again this year. Last year was their first attempt at showing and they gained valuable experience last year as this year they both placed very high in their showmanship classes. Katie got a first in her class of Dalmatian cavies while Rachel got a second with her black cavie. Congratulations on a job well done girls!

Last Thursday evening was the Part and Catch in the arena, where some
South County residents participated. Dean Bell and Hank Brown were the big winners that night. Dean and Hank both had a pretty good weekend as they both came back on Sunday and won the Open Calf Branding as well. Others competing on Sunday from South County included: John, Mike, Tom, Steve and Tracie Nino, Nessen Schmidt, Tracie Eade-Jones, Ken Griffin, Allan and Jerad Renz, Vern and Jo Ann Scattini, Alex and Stacey Schmidt, Rick Eskue and Todd and I. Congratulations go out to Pat and Kris Regan for winning the Cattle Sorting and to Paula Rodriques and Stacey Brooks for winning the Ladies Calf Branding. Twin brothers Brian and Russel Tobias out-roped the rest of their field to win the Kids’ Calf Branding. Great job boys, in a few years you’ll be out there on Leo and Butter!
The Junior Rodeo was held last Saturday and thank goodness for that. Our
kids did well enough there to help pay for our weekend – if it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t have come home with a dime last weekend! A big thank you goes out to Dick and Jeanie Cofield and their crew for putting on what we think is the best junior rodeo of the whole year.
Besides the fair last week, there were a few other things happening in
South County. Jerry and Alma Carlsen hosted their annual End of Season BBQ
last Saturday at their place. Due to conflicting schedules with the Air Show
and the fair, they didn’t have quite the turnout they usually have – only
about 140 people showed up (sounds like a big one to me!). Some of those
from South County and Hollister who attended included: Laurence and Donna
Hansen, Vern and Jo Ann Scattini, George and Donna Palmer along with sister
Dee Dee, Ellen Schwarz with Breanna and Allison, the entire Beaver Damn Fire
Department (they really get around socially!), Mark and John Lavagnino, Mitch
Hitchcock and Melinda and Danny Perez. Besides all their guests, Jerry’s
four children were all there and together for the first time in 12 years. It
was a quick visit for them all but at least they were able to get together.
Cynnie O’Connor hosted a birthday/sewing day for me last Wednesday down at Tully Hall. Those are always fun days. I brought a quilt that needed to be layered and the gals layered it for me for my birthday, no excuses not to get that one done now! Those who stopped by to sew or share lunch included Cynnie, Kasey Hurley, Donna Hansen, Peggy Casey, Holly Casey, Karen Benedix and Heike Baumgartner. Peggy Casey had an old microwave oven she didn’t need anymore that was still in great condition so she brought it out and donated it to Tully Hall. Thanks Peggy, it will be put to great use!
Cynnie will be hosting Bitterwater Tully School’s hot lunch for October on Friday the 11th. If you’re in the area, be sure to stop by. Also, the school’s See’s Candy Fundraiser is now underway. If you’d like to do some early Christmas shopping, get in touch with any Bitterwater Tully student and
place your See’s Candy order now through Nov. 1.
Don’t forget the Home Department meeting that will also be held on Friday the 11th. It will be at the Bear Valley Hall at 10:30 a.m., potluck
lunch to follow.
