When teachers head back to the classroom, they often bring more than lesson plans and school-issued supplies with them. Many reach into their own pockets to make sure their students have the books and materials they need.

Hill’s Bookstore in Hollister wants to help.

The bookstore is offering 40% off all books purchased by teachers, librarians and school administrators for classrooms and libraries. There are no complicated requirements or paperwork. The store is relying on the honor system and is offering the discount whether the books are being purchased with personal money, school funds or a grant or scholarship.

The goal is simple: Help educators stretch their dollars further and put more books into the hands of local children.

Hill’s is also helping call attention to another local resource, the Connie O’Connor Education Fund, which has been supporting San Benito County schools for three decades.

The fund was created in memory of Connie Colleen O’Connor, a beloved Hollister elementary school teacher. Since 1996, her family and community supporters have raised more than $250,000 to help local educators and schools purchase books, classroom supplies and other materials.

Teachers and administrators who need assistance can contact Joan Perreira at 831.637.7185 to request information and application forms.

The fund also relies on community volunteers and donations, with contributions going directly toward San Benito County schools. The organization holds an annual raffle featuring prizes donated by local businesses and welcomes businesses interested in participating.

The Connie O’Connor Education Fund works with the Community Foundation for San Benito County. For information about donations, contact the foundation at 831.630.1924 or visit givesanbenito.org.
