A sharp earthquake jolted San Benito County residents this morning, particularly near the quake’s epicenter in San Juan Bautista.
Elizabeth Hernandez, a supervisor at Windmill Market in San Juan, was stocking shelves at 6:34 a.m. when the magnitude 3.8 temblor struck, centered two miles south of the Mission City.
“It was really scary,” Hernandez said. “A few items fell off the shelves. It was like pulling something out and shaking it.”
No merchandise was damaged, Hernandez said.
An employee at Nob Hill Foods in Hollister said the store suffered no damage.
The quake was felt at Pinnacles National Monument, 26 miles south-southeast of Hollister, a park employee said.
The quake was followed by a magnitude 2.9 aftershock at 7:19 a.m. centered a mile south of the site of the earlier temblor.
A magnitude 6.7 earthquake rocked southern Alaska at 4:27 a.m. PDT Wednesday. Centered 85 miles south of Fairbanks, the quake was reportedly felt in cities 350 miles away. No major damage was reported, however.
