Football team fails to make playoffs for first time under Cameron

The Palma Chieftains finally put an end to the San Benito Haybalers disappointing football season with a 41-20 pounding at the Salinas Sports Complex.

The loss left the Haybalers on the wrong side of the Central Coast Section playoffs for the first time in coach Chris Cameron’s tenure.

Chieftains running back Luke Lippincott bruised the Haybalers defense for 137 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries. The Haybalers’ final record stands at 4-5-1 overall and 2-3 in the Tri County Athletic League, while the Chieftains improved to 9-1 overall and 4-1 in league.

The Haybalers’ disappointing season was marred by on the field injuries to key offensive and defensive lineman and off the field problems with its running back.

The Haybalers squad was also young and inexperienced, so it’s no surprise the team struggled.

San Benito quarterback Lee Osborne, who took over for an injured Gordon Ross midway through the season, wrapped up his high school career in fine fashion. Osborne ran for 118 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries.

His two-yard run at 5:31 in the first quarter knotted the score at seven, but Palma retaliated with a 67-yard touchdown run to make it 14-7. The Chieftains reached the endzone three more times before the Haybalers could respond.
