Women hoopsters lose game they should have dominated
On paper, it was a game they could have won. On the court, it
was a game they should have won.
So when the Gavilan women’s basketball team lost 53-40 to San
Jose Christian College after battling to tie the score at 27-27
with 14 minutes to go, Ram Coach Michelle Mannisto wasn’t the happy
as she walked off the court Tuesday night in front of the home
crowd.
”
We just didn’t come ready to play tonight,
”
said Mannisto.
”
It was a good opportunity to get a win. And it’s so hard to lose
when you should win. Unfortunately, we didn’t have anyone step up
and take charge.
”
With the loss, the Rams dropped to 2-7 while San Jose improved
to 3-5.
At 7 p.m. Saturday night, Gavilan will look to rebound against
the College of the Sequoias. But unlike San Jose Christian, which
had similar size, talent and depth to Gavilan, the Giants play a
more dominant game and will pose more of a threat to the Rams on
both sides of the floor.

It’s going to be a tough game for us,
”
said Mannisto.
”
We need to play hard. It’s as simple as that. Tonight, we didn’t
play hard and we didn’t stay within our offense.
”
Despite the loss Tuesday, both Nicole Donley and Kisha Webster
had solid performances on the court for the Rams.
Webster had 13 points to lead her team and Donley tacked on
another 10 points.
Mannisto, however, was expecting a lot more.
”
Nicole handled the ball well, drove and scored. But Kisha must
have missed six shots inside two feet. She boarded and scored and
took it to the hole. But she had more opportunity than what she
gave me. We can’t do that and win games,
”
she said.
For most of the game things were nip and tuck and it looked like
having the home-court advantage may be enough to put Gavilan over
the top.
At halftime, the score was 21-17 and the game could have gone
either way.
But in the second half, despite scoring six more points, mental
mistakes, turnovers and poor defense cost Gavilan the victory.
It also didn’t help the Rams situation any that the scoring
wasn’t spread around enough. Other than Donley and Webster, not a
single Ram broke the double-digit-scoring barrier and four others
didn’t score a single point.

We had sparks of life in the second half but didn’t run the
offense and cut hard on the other end of the basket,
”
said Mannisto.
”
We just have a lot of role players on this team that aren’t
accustomed to taking charge and we need them to do it.
”
So far the Rams have only played in non-league games. Their
first interdivisional conference game takes place on Jan. 2 at
Ohlone College.
