The Hollister High wrestling team showed promise in the Kenny Fehlman Memorial Tournament last weekend in Mattson Gym. The Balers threw out some new faces out on the mat and many came through with flying colors.

Hollister tied with Wilcox for fourth place as both teams went 4-4 in the nine-team field. Dos Pueblos of Santa Barbara shocked the strong field by going 8-0 while Fremont of Sunnyvale was 7-1 with Atascadero third.

“We did pretty well considering we were missing three of our top wrestlers,” said Baler head coach Matt Olejnik. “And we had some others who haven’t made weight, yet.”

Two Balers went 7-1 for the weekend – sophomores Jamie Driskill at 119-pounds and Alex Diaz at 140/145-pounds. Trevor Guerra and Chris Uribe combined to go 6-2 at 125-pounds with each absorbing a defeat. Brent Kelsey, at 130 and 140-pounds, went 6-2, with heavyweight Tito Flores also going 6-2.

The Balers were actually ahead of Fremont 30-3, but the Firebirds came back to pin the Balers six straight matches, taking a 39-36 victory.

“Our lightweights looked real good,” said Olejnik. “That was expected. I liked the way Jose Garcia and Sean Donnelly wrestled for us at 189’s. They did some good things for us. So did Jake DeHann at 135’s.”

The Balers host Bellarmine this Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a non-league dual match.
