Dual Immersion Parent Workshop

SAN JUAN – San Juan School will be having a Parent Workshop for their Dual Language Immersion Program Jan. 9, in the school’s cafeteria from 6 to 7:30 p.m. This workshop is for families currently enrolled in the K-5th grade program and for interested preschool and kindergarten families. Leading the workshop will be one of California’s leading experts on dual language education, Rosa Molina from the Association of Two-Way & Dual Language Education. Topics include the benefits of being fluent in two or more languages starting in kindergarten and what expectations parents should have for their children acquiring a second language. Boy Scouts offer Christmas tree pick-up

SAN BENITO – Hollister’s Boy Scout Troop 436 and San Juan Bautista’s Troop 428 will be providing curbside pick-up service for Christmas trees. The troops are asking for an $8 donation. All trees are recycled. The pick-up dates are Dec. 29, 30 and Jan. 5 and 6.

On the pick-up dates, leave your tree visible at the curb by 9 a.m., stripped of all decorations and stands. Trees do not need to be cut in sections. The troops accept flocked trees. Both cities are served twice on each pick-up date. No need to call to give an address unless there are special instructions. Please call for special pick-ups outside the city limits. Donations can be left under the doormat.

On the pick-up dates, the troops also have drop sites available at Veterans Memorial Park, Enterprise Road, and at the San Juan Bautista Scout House.

Save the date for Open Studios

SAN BENITO – The San Benito County Arts Council is calling all local artists to save the date for the next Open Studios Art Tour 2013. OS 2013 will be held on Saturday & Sunday, June 1-2 throughout San Benito County. Blood drive

Friends to hold Adopt-a-Book fundraiser

HOLLISTER – The Friends of the San Benito County Free Library invite the community to be sponsors for its Adopt-a-Book fundraiser through “Birdies for Charity” to buy books for the San Benito County Free Library. For every dollar donated, the Monterey Peninsula Foundation will match it plus 15 percent. Fellowship open to local students

HOLLISTER – The Center for California Studies is offering a fellowship program for recent college graduates with a bachelor’s degree. The opportunities include the Jesse Marvin Unruh Assembly Fellowship, Senate, Executive and Judicial fellowships. Applicants must be 20 years of age by Sept. 1, 2013. Graduate, postgraduate and mid-career applicants are also welcome. The deadline to apply for a fellowship is Feb. 11, with each fellowship having its own requirements. The fellowship runs 11 months, with health benefits and a monthly stipend of $1,972.
