Gavilan's Emily Tonascia spikes the ball between Skyline's Sarah Wright, left, and Chrystal Buechner during their match Wednesday.

San Benito High and Gavilan College graduate Emily Tonascia was named to the 2012 Scholar Athlete Women’s Honor Roll by the California Community Colleges Athletics Association.

Tonascia, who earned a 3.52 grade point average, is the first former Ram to earn such an award. The award is in its 30th season.

Tonascia, who played volleyball for Menlo College last fall, will be recognized at a lunch on March 27 in San Mateo.

During the year, Tonascia played in all 24 matches, helping Menlo earn a 17-7 overall record. She finished with 83 kills. She transfered from Gavilan last year.
