Former San Benito High and Gavilan College football player Wade Jacobson might have left the Washington Redskins after a three-day mini camp tryout without a contract Monday, but that doesn’t mean one might not be coming.

Jacobson, who was inserted at right tackle for the Redskins during the three-day camp, believed the tryout went well, he said.

“It went really great,” he said. “We just started right away. Usually when you go to things like this they give you a little time to get acclimated. They didn’t. After the physical they gave us a 100-page book full of plays. They told us we should know it by tomorrow.”

After spending a day learning the plays, Jacobson, who was invited to the Redskins rookie mini camp after the NFL Draft concluded, was quickly named the top right tackle. More than 70 players participated in the three-day camp.

“I got a lot of reps,” he said. “It was cool. Going to college you see all the guys from schools like Alabama and I got to play against those guys. I was going heads up against those guys. That was cool.”

The camp was also filled with some veteran players who were working though injuries, Jacobson said. But he wasn’t overwhelmed by the moment.

“For myself, I think I did a really good job,” Jacobson said. “I can do this. I can play at this level. I want to do whatever the teams need.”

Jacobson knows a contract will be based upon what the team needs or is looking for, he said.

“I don’t know what spots are going to be open,” he said. “They said they would be in touch. I just have to wait for that call. The coaches are going to look at the film. They didn’t tell us when they would call.”

In the meantime, Jacobson and his agent will continue to search for tryouts with other teams in the NFL- with possible opportunities in the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League.

Jacobson, though, will focus on words from Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan. The two-time Super Bowl champion told the rookies to not give up if they don’t get a phone call.

“He told us that we know the system and you’ll never know when you can get a call,” Jacobson said.

But it’s now a waiting game for Jacobson, he said.

“We’ll see what happens,” he said. “I’m just going to wait and look for that phone call.”
