Hollister police early Sunday arrested a local man suspected of trying to break into an apartment building and possessing drug paraphernalia, according to a statement from Hollister police.

Police at about 2 a.m. Sunday arrested Ruben Chavez, 40, of Hollister on suspicion of vandalism and possession of suspected drugs.

According to the HPD statement:

Officers responded to a call of a man with a pony tail causing a disturbance at an apartment complex in the 800 block of South Street. Officers located and detained Chavez immediately. Officers found evidence suggesting Chavez was trying to break into the apartment (window screen removed, screen door destroyed). Chavez was initially arrested for vandalism; however a routine search revealed drug paraphernalia in his pocket and a package of a suspected controlled substance.

Chavez was booked into San Benito County Jail for vandalism, possession of paraphernalia and possession of a suspected controlled substance.
