Editor,

I was aghast to read that Hazel Hawkins CEO Ken Underwood is endeavoring to get a $500 landing fee from Calstar unless county employees receive a discount.

County employees should do what many other county residents do – buy a Calstar membership. A family membership for one year costs only $55!

Some insurance companies will partially cover the cost of an “air ambulance,” but usually not the full cost, which can range from $10,000-$15,000. If you are a Calstar member they will bill your insurance plan, if you have one, for their services. You are not billed for any remaining balance. Membership can be done over the telephone, just call (888) 207-LIFE.

We are a rural community and Calstar provides emergency transportation 24/7 during that “Golden Hour,” the critical time needed to get seriously injured residents to a triage center.

A life saving flight is priceless! I hope the hospital administration conducts negotiations with Calstar considering the best interests of all residents, not only county employees.
