Hollister – It wouldn’t be summer in San Benito County without the annual Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo at Bolado Park.

Organizers are busy preparing for the event – a county tradition for 73 years – which will begin at 8am Sunday with the Figure-8 Roping Eliminations and Jackpot Roping. Both Sunday events are free to the public. The rodeo will begin in earnest the following weekend, with events on June 23-25.

“We have a good show coming along,” said Ann Strickland, Saddle Horse Association office manager.

Events for the June 23-25 weekend include bull riding, wild cow milking, Figure-8 roping and much more. There will also be a western art and equipment show each day.

San Benito County Clerk/Auditor/Recorder John Hodges said he’s been attending the rodeo since he was a child, adding that his father was among the event’s founders. Hodges said he’ll be an usher this year, helping people find their seats.

Hodges said that when he was a younger man he participated in many of the rodeo events. He recalled a harrowing bull ride: “I got bucked. I landed just right,” he said. “I figured that was enough with the bull.”
