‘Balers defeat Seaside in three straight to bring league record
to 8-2
For once, San Benito High boys’ volleyball coach Hank Mao had a smile on his face following a match.
The Haybalers were able to overcome the tough defense played by visiting Seaside on Monday and went on to win the match in three straight, 25-21, 25-22 and 25-17.
“I thought it was a good win for the team,” Mao said. “Seaside is a good defensive team and they tried to serve us big today but we were able to handle it.”
The first game of the match saw Hollister down 8-10 early on before battling back to take the lead. The two teams were neck and neck at 17-17 before Hollister’s Nathan Thome served up an ace that got his team rolling. The ‘Balers allowed Seasside only another four points as they went on to victory in the opening game.
The second game of the evening saw more of the same. The two teams went back and forth, neither able to gain a significant advantage.
But Hollister’s ability to pass the ball effectively proved to be the difference.
At 20-18 in favor of Seaside, Jeff Hawks hooked teammate Jon Crepeau up with a perfect set, which he hammered past the Spartans’ front line for a score.
Hollister went on a roll from there and outscored Seaside 7-4 the rest of the way to close out the second game.
Crepeau led Hollister’s offense with 15 kills. Thome, Adam Salas and Anthony parcell each had five.
Hawks racked up 26 kills in the win and the team notched four blocks.
The ‘Balers are back on the court Wednesday to host Salinas.
