Erik Olson had another double-double and the Anzar Hawks broke out of a three-game losing streak with a 51-28 first round victory over San Jose High Academy Wednesday.

It was the first game of the San Jose High Academy Invitational, and the Hawks will advance to play Evergreen tonight at 7:30 p.m. Evergreen defeated Gunderson Wednesday “pretty easily,” said Anzar coach Ed Cecena.

Olson had 17 points and 13 rebounds for the double-double, and added three assists, three blocks and a pair of steals. Teammate Steven Mockabee also contributed a strong game with 15 points behind three 3-pointers. He added six rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Anzar also received some bench help from Tony Tovar (three points) and Jason Merz (four points).

“They were pretty small and they didn’t shoot well from the outside,” Cecena said of San Jose High. “So we made them shoot a lot of outside shots, which they did not convert.”

Cecena called the win a “great improvement” over Anzar’s recent stretch of games, which has resulted in the team’s 3-3 record after starting the season 2-0. Said the coach, “It feels like we’re back on track.”

The Hawks will play Evergreen tonight, and should see a stronger opponent than what they saw in San Jose High.

Girls Soccer

The Anzar Hawks girls soccer team delivered their third win a row in dominating fashion as they crushed visiting Calvary Christian 12-0 Wednesday.

Brianna McCain scored the first goal of her high school career. Fifteen minutes later, she had the first hat trick of her high school career as she scored three goals on the day at the 4th, 17th and 19th minutes.

In fact, Danielle McMath (40th minute), Erin Deleissegues (60th), Sabrina Farmer-Perez (64th) and Jen Gross (64th) all deposited the first goals of their high school careers, while Jenny Lavarone (54th) scored her first goal at the varsity level.

Olivia Austin also added two goals in the 5th and 8th minutes, while Molly Slovacek and Cayley Faurot-Daniels each added a score in the 35th and 6th minutes, respectively.

Alex Brown had three assists on the afternoon and Michelle Chatley had two. Faurot-Daniels, Gross and Lavarone each had one.

“In truth, I am more proud of the assists than I am of the goals,” coach Deric McLean said. “In a game where many of my girls could have dribbled the ball into the goal on a whim, everyone’s first thought was on possession and setting each other up. It’s easy to have a large number of unassisted goals on a day like today, but there wasn’t an ounce of selfishness out there …”

Aside from 12 goals scored, Anzar keepers Deleissegues and Brown didn’t make any saves on the day, while the Hawks offense put 42 shots on net against Calvary Christian.

“The ladies kept their composure and put smart balls on the net, forcing a huge number of saves,” McLean said. “Everything we were struggling with in preseason, and since addressed in practices, is starting to evaporate, leaving us the team to beat in the [Coast Athletic League].”

Anzar (3-0 CAL, 4-2 overall) has yet to allow a goal in league play, and will look to continue the trend on Friday when they’ll visit Gonzales at 3:30 p.m.
