Gonzales – The Anzar girls’ volleyball team ran its winning streak to seven matches with a sweep of host Gonzales on Tuesday. Behind strong serves and their customary tough defense, the Hawks improved to 8-2 in the Mission Trail Athletic League with their 25-15, 25-18, 25-17 win.

“We’re just building momentum,” Anzar co-head coach Mike Dorney said. “When you get on a winning streak, you get momentum. You get confidence, and they’re playing like that.”

Junior middle Christina Flores led the Hawks with 15 kills and five blocks, while senior outside hitter Emily Deleissegues recorded 13 kills and 21 digs. Both Anzar stars had three aces.

“We continue to have really tough serves,” said Dorney when asked to pinpoint the driving force behind his team’s latest win.

The Hawks (14-4) haven’t lost since they suffered a sweep at the hands of undefeated MTAL leader King City on Sep. 20.

After hosting Greenfield on Thursday, Anzar hits the challenging finale to its regular season. The Hawks play league contenders Soledad, Carmel and Pacific Grove, as well as King City, before facing winless Robert Louis Stevenson in their final match.

Should Anzar maintain its hold on second place in the MTAL, it would advance to the Central Coast Section Division V playoffs.
