Hawks swimming program continues to grow and prosper
The Anzar varsity swim team defeated York 83-62 in a double dual Mission Trail Athletic League meet on Thursday to pick up its first ever win in its three seasons. Host Santa Catalina of Monterey defeated Anzar 102-62.

“I am so impressed and proud of our strong presence,” said coach Debra Stone. “This is Anzar’s third year swimming, and I think the varsity girls have done an awesome job of stepping up to the challenge. They swam strong and with determination against much more experienced and established swim teams.”

Anzar has been swimming with York this season, but this was the Hawks’ first chance to go against them this season. Anzar, who doesn’t have a pool of their own, has been practicing at neighboring Gilroy High.

Junior Erika Rodriquez and freshman Bethany Ellison are close to posting CCS qualifying times. Both athletes are less than a second from qualifying. Rodriquez has a time of 2:24.67 in the 200 IM, and Ellison has a personal record of 27.29 in the 50 free. Anzar will be at Pacific Grove next Friday.

The Hawks’ 200 medley relay team of Kelsey Stone, Bri Gottlieb, Rodriquez and Ellison beat both York and Santa Catalina for first place.

Ellison also placed first in both meets in the 50 free (27.29) and the 100 free (59.50). Rodriguez won in the 200 IM against both teams with a time of 2:24.67.

Kelsey Stone came in first against Santa Catalina in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:23.68, and Sharon Snow placed first in the 200 free with a time of 2:25.58.

Against York, Gottlieb swam a 1:27.51 in the 100 breastroke to finish first. The 200 free relay team (Ellison, Gottlieb, Stone and Rodriquez) also finished first with a time of 1:58.26.
