SAN JUAN BAUTISTA

The Anzar High girls basketball team’s scheduled home game against Oakwood was postponed on Wednesday after the visiting Morgan Hill school was without a full team.

It’s the second time this season the two teams have had to postpone their league contest, setting up a scheduling conflict on Friday.

Although Wednesday’s postponed game has not been rescheduled yet, the previous Anzar-Oakwood game that was postponed earlier this season was rescheduled for Friday, the same day Anzar is set to battle Pacific Collegiate in Santa Cruz.

“It was a weird storm,” said Anzar head coach Aaron Netzel regarding the scheduling.

Netzel said his varsity team will travel to Santa Cruz to take on Pacific Collegiate at 5:30 p.m., while his junior varsity team, coached by Mike Bonomi, will take on Oakwood School in Morgan Hill at 6 p.m.

The two teams had extreme difficulty finding an exact day to play their game, Netzel said, leading to the dual games on Friday. With the Hawks currently involved in a battle for first place in the Coastal Athletic League with Pacific Collegiate, as well as a subsequent Central Coast Section playoff berth, Netzel said his team cannot afford to take a forfeit this late in the season.

“We have to make every reasonable effort to play this game … otherwise the forfeit will be on us,” Netzel said. “This is the only way.”

Oakwood School, which did not play in the CAL last year, has lost two league games to Pacific Collegiate already this season, 51-11 and 49-11. They also suffered a 48-16 defeat at Marina.

Anzar, meanwhile, is 5-1 in the CAL.

ANZAR HIGH BOYS BASKETBALL

The Anzar High boys basketball team lost 49-40 at Greenfield Wednesday.

The Hawks held a 28-26 lead going into the fourth quarter, although Greenfield outscored Anzar 23-12 in the final period.

Johnny Doty and Jason Merz led the Hawks with 13 points apiece. Greenfield’s Gustavo Flores led all scorers with 26 points.

Anzar falls to 1-8 in the Mission Trail Athletic League, 1-16 overall.

The Hawks will host King City Friday at 7 p.m. in San Juan Bautista.
