The appeal before the county board for the planning commission’s denial of a Ridgemark commercial center has been scheduled for Sept. 27.

The county planning commission Aug. 3 unanimously denied the proposal for a 19,500-square-foot commercial structure. John and Alex Kehriotis, from JMK Investments that owns the Ridgemark property, filed the appeal within 10 days as required.

San Benito County supervisors will consider the appeal at their 9 a.m. meeting Sept. 27 at the County Administration Building, 481 Fourth St., according to planning official Byron Turner.

The project at 151 Ridgemark Drive would act primarily as a neighborhood shopping destination and would include parking, landscaping and an outdoor patio “with its primary purpose being to serve the neighborhood community by providing retail/office space,” according to a county report.

Opponents have criticized the proposed center’s size and close proximity to existing housing. The developers have touted its potential for job creation and that the area already is zoned for commercial uses.

At the Aug. 3 planning meeting, commissioners requested that the developers consider moving the building to the northwest part of the lot bordering the golf course. John Kehriotis told planning commissioners he wouldn’t consider moving the site, and the panel denied the project.
