This is the proposed design of the new San Benito County flag.

San Benito County could have an approved county flag as soon as the next board of supervisor meeting on Feb. 22 after members of the San Benito High School’s Future Farmers of America approved the county’s draft flag Wednesday.

The flag, which pays homage to the state flag, is on a white background with a red strip on the base and the county’s seal in the middle. Under the seal and above the stripe are the words “San Benito County.”

The FFA hopes to purchase two flags, one for their students and one for the county, once the county officially passes the design, FFA booster and District Attorney Candice Hooper said.

The board recommended the design at its Jan. 25 meeting after discussing alternatives for around 20 minutes.

The FFA quickly agreed to the design at its Feb. 9 meeting, Hooper said. The students liked the design and how it represented the county.

“They really liked it,” Hooper said.

The FAA’s interest in a county flag was sparked after not having a flag for the annual Chapter Officer Leadership Conference held in San Benito County each year. Students expressed interesting in having a flag that represented the county and themselves at the conference.

During the first board of supervisor meeting in January, Hooper and a pair of students presented the idea to the county – which quickly agendized the item.

The FFA hopes to have the flag before the next conference in October.
