The McDonald’s Happy Meal – that quintessential entree of children’s entrees – is now offering a larger dose of healthy to coincide with the happy.
As of Friday, the chain restaurant rolled out the newest version of a longtime mainstay: The Happy Meal now automatically includes one-fourth cup of apple slices as a side to either Chicken McNuggets, a hamburger or cheeseburger. Although not new, fat-free chocolate milk and one percent white milk will continue to be options.
While apples have been added, French Fries inside the Happy Meal have been reduced by 2.9 ounces. For customers who prefer a side of apples only, two bags will be available upon request.
The new Happy Meal won’t be available nationwide until 2012, but California is one of the first places in the country to serve it, according to a press release.
“I would like to thank the customers of Gilroy for helping to define the new Happy Meal for McDonalds,” said Steve Peat, who, along with his wife, Jan, owns three McDonald’s franchises in Gilroy along with several others in Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley and Capitola.
Their Gilroy locations actually served as one of the test markets, Peat said, “and the platform that McDonald’s has gone forward with is the platform we tested.”
Peat reiterated his gratitude for his customers’ participation and feedback, “which helped define the way the future of McDonald’s is headed with the Happy Meal.”
According to its press release, McDonald’s has been offering apples as a requested Happy Meal choice since 2004.
