The final non-league girls basketball contest of the season went the way of Hollister High on Saturday as the Balers held off host Monterey 62-51 to run their record to 13-3.

Tri-County Athletic League play commences Thursday when the Balers entertain Live Oak at 7 p.m.

Gina Caianiello and Naomi Ruiz each had 13 points to lead the Balers. Caianiello added four assists and three steals, while Ruiz had an impressive 12 rebounds, 11 on the defensive end. Center Sarah Groman was 5-of-5 from the floor and had 11 points to go with seven boards.

It was a balanced attack for the Balers, who had nine points and four assists from Trisha Lee and eight points and seven rebounds from Jennifer Tremblay.

JV result:The junior varsity Balers are now 15-2 after a 42-28 dismantling of Monterey on Saturday. The Balers put up an amazing 73 shots, but made just 15 field goals. However, they controlled the boards with an astounding 48 rebounds, 32 on the offensive end.

“We executed our game plan very well,” said Baler coach Tom Dean. “We forced them to shoot way out from the outside. We handled their pressure with a minimal of problems.”

Jaime Hall had nine points, while Johni Kiesewetter had eight points for the Balers. Jen Crepeau had seven boards, while Ashley Patton and Cortney Almaguer had five steals each.

Baler bits: It was a good week for ex-Balers. Alicia Coppola had a career-high 24 points for Cal State Stanislaus in an overtime win over Sonoma State Saturday night in Rohnert Park. The junior has started seven of 11 games for the Warriors (7-4, 4-2), who play in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Coppola is averaging 7.5 points per game. – Closer to home, 2002 Baler alums Stacey Perrien had 17 points and Nicole Donley 13 as Gavilan College beat Cabrillo last Wednesday 68-64.
