San Jose – It’s on to the final four for the San Benito High girls basketball team.
The Baler girls went into Saturday’s game against Santa Teresa well prepared and came away with the 50-45 victory and will face Carlmont tonight for a shot at the championship game.
“We were very prepared for Santa Teresa,” said Hollister head coach Tom Dean. “We just totally took them right out of their game. We just wore them down. They weren’t very deep and we were able to take advantage late in the game.”
Turnovers plagued the Baler offense early on but the team made the necessary adjustments at the half and managed to take much better care of the ball in the final two quarters as they outscored Santa Teresa 31-25 in the second half.
Senior guard Trisha Lee led the way for Hollister with her 13 points. Teammate Jaime Flores added nine, Jaime Hall had eight and Johni Kieswetter and Crystina Osborne each scored six.
Dani Andrewson chipped in seven points but also had an outstanding defensive effort, holding one of Santa Teresa’s top players to only four points, all of which came from the free-throw line.
“The girls are really playing well together now and seem to be peaking at just the right time,” Dean said. I believe that if we get to the championship game, it will be our defense that will be responsible. The desire and intensity is there, all we need to do is execute well.”
No SBHS girls’ team has ever won two games in the CCS playoffs. This year’s squad will look to further add to its legacy tonight when it faces Carlmont.
